I know the series is written by different people but you could really feel the difference in this one. Crown of Blood is authoritative, thoughtful and elegantly written. I learned a lot about Lady Jane Grey, the nine days queen, by reading this, including that she was actually queen for a few days more. Usually my five star ratings are reserved for Alison Weir and David Starkey, but Nicola Tallis is a promising new historian with a fresh and invigorating look into the life and tragedy of Lady Jane Grey. Wonderful writing. I have always been intrigued by the story of Lady Jane Grey, the Nine Days Queen (which, after reading this book, I learned it was actually thirteen days), but Tallis' account of history was so suspenseful! If you love the Tudors and don't know anything about Jane Grey, this might be for you. Tallis, who is a protegee of Alison Weir in the for-profit Country House tourism game, is looking at Jane Grey, and the world in which Tudors were two generations rooted, it was reasonable to try for a throne grab because it had worked before, and where religious differences could both be irredeemable gulfs be. Meh. A strong sequel in a great series. Madison, Kristy, Iva and Jaxon are all back in the third book of the series. I've read briefly about her in various histories about the Tudor era but this is the first extensive study of her I have read. I was captivated with the discoverys and the twist and turns of events of the story. I noticed inconsistencies in the story, while it may seem silly but forgetting what colour your character's hair seems a little sad. She was also the great niece of Henry the eighth and this tenuous link to the throne was to prove her downfall. We left Madison in a strange vision of the past, where she encountered Damon, the “Statue Man”! Jaxon is not willing to help and seems to be hiding something. The storyline from this book was great but again wish I had backstory from first two books but the one that was written throughout this one was great and well written. Although her reign was brief (so, too, her life), there is an abundance of material in this book about Jane's early years, and what she wrote or said during her time in the Tower. Am I the only one who thinks it weird that Sarah Gristwood, Tracey Borman, Alison Weir and Nicola Tallis continuously give each other 5 star gushing reviews?
